Issue #2 - June 2006
Minister's Message
As you know, Pentecost Sunday fell this year on June 4. In Greek, Pentecost means "fifty"; it has this unusual name because this festival originally took place on the fiftieth day after the Jewish Feast of Passover. According to the Second Chapter of the Book of Acts, the first Pentecost occurred in Jerusalem not long after Jesus' resurrection on Easter Day. On that occasion the Holy Spirit, which looked like tongues of flame, descended from heaven and rested on the head of each believer there. Because of this association with the "fire" of the Holy Spirit, the official color of Pentecost if red.
Pentecost is sometimes called the "Church's Birthday." Since it comes after Easter, it also provides a connection between the resurrection of Jesus and the sending of the church into the world in the name of Christ. Through the centuries, Christians have believed that this season is especially appropriate for baptisms. In some English churches, this practice has been preserved by calling this day Whitsunday ("White Sunday"), a reference to the white garments worn by those being baptized.
It would be a mistake for us to think of Pentecost only as an event that occurred long ago in Jerusalem. According to Acts 2, what happened on that first Pentecost still takes place among us today. The Holy Spirit is alive and well; it continues to mobilize us, guiding churches and individual Christians toward new frontiers of witness and service.

Youth Views
Each Wednesday, the youth of our church and community gather together for our Community Youth Night from 5:00 - 6:15pm. This activity has only been running since March, however, it has been a remarkable success.
The youth have come to appreciate this opportunity to spend time together at church. The Community Youth Night (known as CYN) seeks to help the youth do better in school, be more prepared for college/work, and to help them have a chance for recreation. The evening begins with a healthy dinner, followed by time to work on homework, and ends with recreation time.
Patricia, Denny, Dottie, and others have come and helped out in one way or another. We have been lucky to have enough money and help for the CYN. However, we can always use more help. Each week we need help picking the youth up, making dinner, and cleaning up.
The Community Youth Night has been a great program. I have a great time hanging around with the youth every Wednesday. However, there are more youth in Louisa that need this kind of opportunity. Please, help us in spreading the word about this program to the rest of Louisa. Thanks!

WOMAN TO WOMAN EXPERIENCE 2006 TRIP
About 15 Disciples women will learn more about Haiti and the Dominican Republic as part of this year's Woman to Woman Worldwide 2006 experience. Participants will get an opportunity to visit Haiti, a country with a number of social, economic and political challenges where women and children continue to bear the brunt of many problems.
Women on the trip will get an opportunity to see how ministry takes place in countries such as Haiti, and the ways the faith and strength of Haitian women can shine through all their challenges. Those on the 2006 trip also will visit and experience the ministries and work taking place in the Dominican Republic. The trip will allow church women to experience two countries, two cultures, and two languages, all on one island.

A Great Joke
After the church service, a little boy told the pastor: "When I grow up, I'm going to give you some money." "Well, thank you," the pastor replied, "but why?" "Because my daddy says you're one of the poorest preachers we've ever had."
