Minister's Message

We all know that church newsletters can be kind of squirrelly. They are hard to put together. Sometimes, there seems to be more news than can possibly fit in two pages. At other times, ministers have to drive through town just to find enough news to fill those two pages.

It is no wonder that many churches discontinue the production of their monthly or quarterly newsletter. Often, church newsletters are discontinued because they become full of gossip or nobody reads them. This is not the path our newsletter should take.

Any endeavor of the church (even something as small as a newsletter) should help us to live out God's will for our church. People in our church have asked to have a monthly newsletter published. This newsletter will also be available for download from www.louisachristianchurch.org.

This newsletter will help us to keep in touch with shut-ins, those that have moved, and other people. It will help you to stay up to date on church news, volunteer opportunities, and schedules. It will also give a voice to the people of Louisa Christian Church through monthly articles by youth and other folks in our church. But, most importantly, this newsletter will seek to help you grow with God and serve more faithfully in our church and community.

We hope that each newsletter will be filled with joy, humor, and faith to help you in your spiritual journey through life.

Peace,

~ Matthew

Youth Views

Earlier this month the Youth Group went to volunteer at the Salvation Army in downtown Charlottesville. I took a few a moments to talk with Amber Wood about her experience at the Salvation Army.

Sometimes, we need one of our youth to remind us that it truly is better to give than to receive. That is why Amber is such a good role model to the rest of the youth and adults in our church. She is a good kid and she gladly helps other people out.

Amber remembered that when she was younger, she and her parents needed help with money at times. She still appreciates what people did for her then. Working at the Salvation Army was a great chance for her to give back to others in their time of need.

Amber worked hard at the Salvation Army to organize canned food, make labels, and clean up.

She also got to work with volunteers from UVA and other places. It was really nice to see other people that were so happy to help out for a good cause.

"I definitely would go back and help again", said Amber. Her love for helping people is evident. When asked about helping at the Salvation Army, Amber said, "Everybody should do this. If everybody would just help out, the world would be a better place."

That really says it all. We are thankful for the chance to serve the Salvation Army and we are thankful for Amber's faith.

Other Views

Our new Minister of Music has been with us now for a full year. Steve Comer began his music ministry with our church in June, 2005. The choir is delighted that we have a dedicated musician to lead and inspire us as we work together. The choir members believe that Steve can handle any musical style or arrangement that might come his way. On many occasions when arriving for choir practice, Steve is already in place at the piano playing all types of music for us as we take a seat in the choir loft. His talent is amazing and he is a real "ray of sunshine" for the choir.

The choir continues to grow and we invite you to join us on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM for practice. If you haven’t met Steve and talked with him about his music background, please introduce yourself and get acquainted with him and his family. His wife, Christiana, sings with the choir and his son, Chris, and daughter, Michelle, attend Sunday School and his step-daughter, Lilah, was a speaker at our most recent Youth Sunday. Louisa Christian Church welcomes the Comer family.

The choir is also very excited about publishing a cookbook. We will be working on this project for about six months. We ask for your help and support in supplying recipes for our cookbook. Choir members have recipe forms and we look forward to receiving many Louisa Christian Church recipes from the congregation. Please see any choir member for a recipe form and let's get cookin'!

A Great Joke

During the depression the church had a hard time finding support since so many were out of work. As the minister started towards the pulpit, he noticed a fifty dollar bill lying in the collection basket. Stunned and excited, he announced his find to the congregation and said he was so excited he wasn't sure he could preach.

When he proposed that the person who donated the money could stand up and pick out three hymns, an old maid in the back of the building stood and then, pointing her finger, said, "I'll take him, him and him."
