Issue #26 - June 2008

Minister's Message

As I sat down today to go to work, I realized the church newsletter had been out for over two years consecutively. I began to sift through the newsletters and reread them. Two summers ago, I wrote a meditation for the newsletter. It holds as much truth now as it did when I first wrote it. With that in mind, I placed it in the newsletter this month. I promise, I am not being too lazy to write anything. I just don't think I could improve upon that message very much. Happy summer!

Ordinary Time. This is probably a meaningless phrase for most of us. On the Christian calendar, Ordinary Time runs from after Christmas until Lent and from June 11 until December 3 (it is a couple weeks earlier in 2008). In other words, Ordinary Time is any period in the year not spent celebrating Advent, Christmas, Lent, Pentecost, or Easter.

However, there is nothing ordinary about this season of the Christian Calendar. Ordinary is derived from the word ordinal, which means numbered. So, the weeks during Ordinary Time are numbered. During Ordinary Time, the liturgical color that you will see in churches and ministerial stoles is green.

Even though Ordinary Time is not named ordinary for its plainness or dullness, this part of the Christian Year does tend to take on a tone of ordinariness or dullness. Ordinary Time runs through summer and most of fall. Too often, during these long months between Easter and Christmas, we Christians kind of float in and out of church. Sometimes we lose our passion for ministry during this time and we just plod along.

However, that is not how God wants us to spend this time. Every day should be savored to the last drop. Every day should be spent doing our very best to be more like Jesus Christ.

Don't tumble into the doldrums of summer and fall. Keep your heart set on God and the ministry to which you have been called. After all, there is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time.

Relay for Life

Louisa Christian Church

This year Relay for Life of Louisa will be held on June 14 at the Louisa County High School football field. The opening ceremony is at 9:30 am that Saturday. Events will be going on all day. One of our team's goals is to get everyone who is able to come out and walk at least one lap with us.

To help raise money, a can is in the vestibule of the church for you to drop in some change. We will also be selling chances to win a Volkswagen Beetle, which will be given away at Relay for Life. If you would like to purchase a luminaria or make a donation, please see Matthew or any team member.

Thanks for your support in the fight against cancer!

Get to Know ...

Andrew

If you have spent much time at church, you will certainly have some idea of who Andrew is. One word describes him: fascinating. He is fascinating and he is fascinated by life.

Andrew is David and Eleanor's oldest son. Andrew just turned 10 not too long ago and will be in the 5th grade next year. One of the many things that he excels at is school. Andrew enjoys being in the TAG (Talented and Gifted) program and really likes reading and math.

Andrew was born in Virginia Beach and has spent most of his life here in Louisa. He likes playing baseball (don't say a bad word about the Red Sox!) and he enjoys a good game of Mario Brawl on his Wii. He is kept in good company by his brother, Ben, dog, Sami, and cat, Cauli.

When asked what people would find interesting about him, he said, "I make people laugh." I couldn't deny it. In fact, I found myself laughing at that very moment.

It sounds so vague, but Andrew is just a great kid. He does make people laugh. He likes church and has a genuine faith that drove him to be baptized, which gives him a good sense of pride. He is smart and works hard in school. But, he still knows how to play, have fun, and just be a kid.

If you haven't talked to Andrew much, make an effort to do so. He'll make you laugh, I guarantee it!

We are always open to newsletter articles from groups in the church. If you have an article or an idea for an article, please let Matthew or Debbie Dessent know.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School will be held July 9 - 11 at 5:45 PM to 7:45 PM this year. As always, VBS is open to adults, youth, and children. There is a class for adults only. Additionally, the youth really enjoy spending time with the adults and elders of the church. Please, remember to come to VBS. Growing spiritually will be the topic this year. Talk to Matthew if you would like to volunteer. Also, you can help by spreading the word about our VBS to your neighbors, co-workers, friends, and family.

I Love You

Don't let the sands of time decay.
Don't let the dreams you have carry you away.
Stand strong and accept your fate.
Make the appointment and don't be late.
Watch that movie you love so much,
and don't fear his gentle hand's touch.

Kiss his gentle lips,
feel you heart do back flips.
Let his arms grab you in a hug,
Share his warmth and feel so snug.
Stare at the stars as you hear his voice,
Listen to his words and know his choice.
Look over the ledge but don't stand too close,
Do what you want but love him most.
You stand with him holding hands,
As you walk upon those golden sands.
Don't let the waves of time wash away.
"I love you," is all you have to say.
